The benefits of nicotine salts.
The primary function of organic salt acids in nicotine salts are to help the nicotine salt vaporize at lower temperatures, to lower the pH levels in the nicotine salt, to improve nicotine absorption and to provide a “smoother throat hit” either because of the lower PH or desensitization of the throat.
This is the salt used in the Juul product in the USA that built the present interest in nicotine salts. Nicotine benzoate appears to reduce or make neutral the taste of the nicotine and because of the lowered and more neutral PH (around PH 6.5) results in a smoother and softer throat. In research conducted by Li et al, nicotine benzoate was shown to have the best properties in taste, reduction of throat irritation and maintenance of nicotine stability making it one of the main and preferred salts for e-liquids
Nicotine Salt Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing of nicotine salts whilst not complex does requires an understanding of chemistry and reactions to ensure the salt is correctly formed – poorly produced salts have significant amounts of free nicotine and the acid salt unbound making them a simple mix of the base ingredients rather than a true nicotine salt. When vaped these liquids will not provide the enhanced vaping experience and nicotine delivery.
Processing should also ensure the nicotine free base does not oxidize in process. Whilst some colouration is normal as the process involves heat, thus eliminating the potential formation of unwanted impurities as well as affect the organoleptic properties of the nicotine (taste, colour, smell) and other quality aspects.
